Update from the Parish Council

We would like to thank all those who attend our Parish Council meeting on the 27th June 2017. It was a huge turn out and not surprising given that we have recently been made aware that the Harrogate Borough Council Planners are recommending the ‘Greater Hammerton’ option as their preferred location for a New Town.

We also wish to thank Chris Chelton Chair of the Keep Green Hammerton Green Campaign. He did a brilliant job and we are grateful for his detailed update on the campaign and providing answers to some very difficult questions.

It was clear that the majority of those attending object to Harrogate’s proposals and we thank you for your views. We must of course see what Harrogate Council’s consultation document says when it is published on 14 July, but based on what we know now, the Parish Council intends to object strongly to the Greater Hammerton proposal, just as we did in response to the previous consultation late in 2016. However, this is not just about the Parish Council or the action group. It is vital that each and every resident of the village responds to this consultation, making clear their views. The period for responding will begin on 14 July and we expect it to end on 25 August.

Although no official announcement has been made regarding the Maltkiln development centred around Cattal Station we are minded to object to this as well given the enormous impact this will have on our village. We will just have to wait and see what Harrogate Borough Council announce in the next few weeks.

Recognising the strength of views expressed at the meeting, and the importance of this issue to the village, the Parish Council has agreed in principle to provide financial support to the campaign, matching the funds promised by Green Hammerton Parish Council. We will wish to be satisfied that the campaign also gives due attention to the Maltkiln development, as well as Greater Hammerton.

It is also possible for Kirk Hammerton residents to make individual donations to campaign funds, should they wish to do so. Details of how to do this, and any other information about the action group, can be obtained by contacting any of Kirk Hammerton’s representatives on the action group committee. They are
